I have a new favourite smoothie bowl flavour! On my recent trip to New York I picked up some organic Maca and Cacao powder from Whole Foods. Maca is an Andean root packed full of vitamins, minerals and amino acids and is particularly known to help nourish the endocrine system of the body. Cacao is a good source of magnesium and antioxidants, not to mention it tastes of chocolate! Having felt a little under the weather after suffering from jet lag all week, I decided to try packing as much goodness as I could into my weekend smoothie bowl. Adding the Maca and Cacao powders gave a rich, creamy, chocolatey taste, that was so good it was almost like eating dessert for breakfast. As long as your bananas are ripe, you shouldn’t need to add any extra sugar or sweeter. I topped the bowl with goji berries (another super food), seeds, coconut and fruit. I am definitely a Maca convert and what was good enough for the ancient Incas, is definitely good enough for me.
So why not give the recipe below and try?
Cacao, Maca Superfood Smoothie Bowl – serves 2
2 ripe bananas cut into thin slices and frozen the night before
2 dl of coconut milk
1 tbsp organic Maca powder (I used Navitas Naturals)
2 tbsp organic Cacao powder (Navitas Naturals again)
fruit, nuts, seeds etc to decorate
Blend your frozen bananas until the are finely chopped. Add the milk, cacao and mama and blend until smooth. Depending on how thick you like your smoothie bowl, you can add a little more milk if necessary. Pour into bowls, decorate and you are ready to serve.
