The Butcher’s Daughter – Review

I am currently in New York for my birthday and I am taking the opportunity to check out some of the amazing vegan/ vegetarian places here and hopefully get some inspiration.  We woke up today jet lagged and hungry and decided to check out The Butcher’s Daughter in Nolita (North of Little Italy), a few minutes walk from our hotel.

The cafe is super cool, filled with plants and cacti and has a comfortable industrial shabby chic style.  We sampled the breakfast menu, but they also offer lunch and an evening menu.  The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming and the food was amazing too.  We started with large cups of coffee accompanied with steamed almond milk.  Everything on the menu sounded tempting but I plumped for the breakfast bagel filled with scrambled egg, cashew cheese, adzuki bean bacon, and harissa mayo.  It was simply sensational, tasty, slightly spicy and the best way to drag me from my sleepy haze.  I wish I could find such high quality cashew cheese in Finland and it has definitely inspired me to have a go at making it myself.  Next I took the coconut yoghurt parfait, which consisted of thick creamy coconut yoghurt topped with coconut goji berry granola and masses of fresh berries.  The mix was just perfection – fresh, crunchy, smooth and not too sweet.

Overall I would highly recommend The Butcher’s daughter.  It is a little pricey, but the quality, ambience, service and surroundings make it a great place to visit.  The cafe offers a large list of fresh juices and smoothies and has a small shop next door selling some of its produce and ingredients to take home.  They also offer gluten free and vegan alternatives across their menu.  A special note has to be made about the toilets, which for New York standards were the hight of luxury.  (think scented candles and marble sinks!)  I will definitely try and make it back before my trip ends.
